Hello there!! 👋
Welcome back. Today is the day that your AI learning journey REALLY begins. During these first foundational lessons you’ll get up and running with a practical lesson each day to establish some fundamental concepts and explore some popular tools. Most importantly, the goal is to build your confidence in using AI.
To kick things off, we'll begin with a tool that has become synonymous with AI-driven assistance, ChatGPT.
With its ability to effortlessly generate engaging and personalized content, you’ll use ChatGPT to learn how to streamline your email writing processes, saving time and ensuring messages resonate with recipients.
Please note, during this lesson and the entire challenge, we’ll use ChatGPT as the primary AI chatbot in our examples, but the concepts we teach are universally applicable across other platforms (such as Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude). Feel free to use other AI platforms if you prefer.
Today’s Task📝
🧱 Project: Draft Emails on Autopilot
⏲️ Estimated time: 30 minutes
🛠️ Tools: ChatGPT
Context📄
Today you’ll learn the basics of ChatGPT by using it to draft new emails for you in any tone of voice.
Writing emails in various tones can be challenging and time-consuming, especially when addressing different stakeholders and switching between formal, casual, or authoritative tones.
Here's an example of how you'll be using ChatGPT today 👇
In this lesson you’ll learn:
- The basics of ChatGPT
- How to edit the tone of voice of emails and text
🚨 Before we get started, if you're already a ChatGPT pro, jump to the bottom of this lesson where you'll find an advanced workflow tip 🚨
Let's prep 🥗
What’s ChatGPT?
Think of ChatGPT as a super-smart robot made by OpenAI. Trained on vast sums of Internet data, it's capable of answering questions, writing essays, summarizing texts, translating languages, and even generating creative content such as poetry or short stories.
What's the core concept I need to understand about ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is like a really good guesser. It uses maths to establish connections between words. When you tell it something, it guesses the next word based on the associated words you've used. Remember, it's not actually thinking or understanding, just guessing really well! The technical term for this is "word embeddings" and you can see it play out here👇

Before you delve into constructing your email prompts using ChatGPT:
- If you haven't already, create an OpenAI account here
- Familiarize yourself with the ChatGPT interface
Time to Cook 👩🍳
- Basic set up.
Open your email inbox and copy a recent email you wrote to someone to your clipboard. Log in to ChatGPT and ask it to rewrite the email in a casual tone of voice.
Copy and paste the prompt 👇 into ChatGPT to get started.
Rewrite the following email in a casual tone of voice:
{insert your email copy}
- Ask ChatGPT to change the length of the email.
Now you have a feel for how ChatGPT can customise your emails, ask it to rewrite your email using less than 300 words.
Copy and paste the prompt 👇 as a guide.
Rewrite the following email using less than 300 words:
{insert your email}
- Follow up by adding or removing sections.
You'll often find that your initial prompt missed some useful context or an instruction. With this in mind, ask ChatGPT to include a section about a key point you may have forgotten to include. Use the example prompt below 👇.
The cool thing is, whenever you add a new prompt, ChatGPT remembers what you talked about before. You don't need to start a new conversation each time!
Add a new section to this email with concise next steps, relevant to email topic.
{insert your email}
4. Okay, time for some fun. Ask ChatGPT to ‘Rewrite this email in the style of Elon Musk’. Take a screenshot and share it as part of today’s lesson check-in.
Advanced Workflow 🔥
If you're keen to take what you've learnt one step further, you might like to experiment with Merlin, a handy tool that works seamlessly with ChatGPT.
Merlin is like a helper that lets you use ChatGPT's (and other platforms) abilities anywhere you type on the web, including in your Gmail or Microsoft Mail. So, instead of switching between tabs or copying and pasting text, Merlin brings ChatGPT right to you, wherever you need it.
Take these steps to start using Merlin:
- Visit Merlin's website here and follow the instructions to install it.
- Once installed, simply press the Command + M shortcut to open ChatGPT on any website requiring text input.
- Input your prompt, wait for the AI to generate your text, and voilà! Your email draft is ready, right within your email editor.
As you'll see, using Merlin takes the AI assistant experience to the next level, enabling you to harness the power of AI for efficient and effective email writing, without ever leaving your browser.
