Hello there!! 👋
Today you’ll be synthesizing your voice and creating a unique synthesized voice using ElevenLabs.
Today’s Task📝
🧱 Project: Synthesize Your Voice with ElevenLabs
⏲️ Estimated time: 30 minutes
🛠️ Tools: ElevenLabs
Context📄
In this lesson you’ll be exploring speech synthesis in ElevenLabs. You’ll be synthesizing your own voice as well as creating an entirely unique synthetic voice.
The creation and synthesis of voices using AI is one of the more hotly debated areas of AI. AI synthesis can help people with disabilities and impairments to create content in formats previously inaccessible to them. It can also drive new innovations from content creators.
Common use cases for voice synthesis include:
- Accessibility - providing synthetic voices for people with disabilities or impairments
- Business and marketing applications - such as customer service interactions, voice ads and content accessibility
- Content creation - voiceovers for advertising, videos, entertainment and educational materials
- Travel and tourism - for guides, public service announcements and translation
- Voice assistants - powering the voices of our favourite AI assistants (Siri, Alexa)
- Safety and privacy - altering voices to provide anonymity
It’s also useful to understand the ethical debate around being able to use someone else’s likeness, be it in voice, image or copy.
This TED discussion with AI developer Tom Graham from Metaphysic (famous for the viral Tom Cruise deepfake videos), covers some of the creative use cases for synthesized voice as well as the potential risks with AI-generated media.
ElevenLabs has also created a helpful guide on how to safely use their technology for voice cloning.
In this lesson you’ll learn:
- How to synthesize your voice to create an entirely new delivery style
- How to use voice settings in ElevenLabs to change synthesized voice delivery
- How to create a unique synthetic voice
Let’s Prep 🥗
In this lesson we have two exercises:
1. Creating a synthesized version of your voice.
2. Creating a unique synthetic voice.
For both exercises we’ll be using the generative AI voice platform, ElevenLabs.
It’s best to complete the exercises in the order above for this one.
Have fun!
🔥 Get ready to build!
You’re able to record audio directly in ElevenLabs, but if you’d prefer, an optional step for this lesson is to pre-record an audio clip of 10–20 seconds saying:
’My name is [your name] and I am enrolled in the 100DaysofAI program. I've committed to learning something new about AI for 30 minutes a day, for 100 days. Today I am learning how to create and synthesize voices using AI in ElevenLabs.’
It’s best to record this in a quiet place with minimal background noise.
